Your own personal genius

Is there something you were meant to do that you haven’t discovered yet either? What I can tell you is that there is every chance you’re just around the corner from it, but what is it?

It seemed appropriate to start with a musical reference to this as the history of modern music is loaded with these life twists. Martin Gore was just a band member before the previous songwriter quit and he was thrust into the role as he already wrote one track for his band Depeche Mode.

There’s of course the story of how Phil Collins replaced the exiting Peter Gabriel because he had a go from his drum set and all the guys freaked right out. But what’s really interesting is often sparkling talents for a given instrument like how Jaco Pastorius was originally a drummer before the bassist quit and thought he’d try, and within weeks was on his way to being the greatest bassist in history.

It makes you wonder and what if it’s not confined to music? There’s every chance you are the world’s greatest cojone player but it could also be in some other realm beyond playing crazy cool world beats.

There’s the classic story of 3M, where the scientist was trying to make a permanent adhesive and instead got this stuff that was sticky but didn’t work at all. He realized the potential of a sticky note and the rest was history.

I like the idea that, put simply, the search continues and as you do, you follow what intrigues you. Jaco was in the right area. In fact, from his drum kit he only needed to be on the instrument a few feet to his right. It’s all “In the Meantime” as you search for your thing. How long can you search? I’m 44 and I’ve had bass students 20 years older than me. I know people older than that who are trying their hand at boatbuilding.

And you don’t have to… anything. You don’t have to be the world’s best to enjoy it. Sometimes it’s just fun. I’ve been digging into keyboard playing over the last few months because of a Christmas gig that had long breaks and a piano in the back. I started thinking (ironically) “You know, I think I get how that bit from Depeche Mode would go..”(I had a understanding of keys, but never tried to really play two-handed that much)

But isn’t talent reserved for some higher-blessed types? Possibly not. There is lots of study on this, in fact one book to look out for is called “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle where he slueths out world famous talent hotbeds around the world to find what’s going on. What he discovers is that it is less magically bestowed talent than it is simply how we approach learning something. Daniel has another book called the “Little book of Talent” which condenses this idea of deliberate practice which I won’t go into other than it’s about pushing into the weak spots of what you do, in a way that you can repeat with immediate feedback. Definitely check out his books which are available on the Hoopla app. And no, I don’t work for him, he’s just good.

So is there anything you’ve thought of trying your hand at recently.

Who knows? You might be the genius we’ve all been waiting for.

Creative adventures

These days I’m seeking them out which I admit is why I have been a little scattered across media. For a while, yes, I was posting on here morre frequently, which I know I really should be doing even more frequently. Started doing morning pages again. Hopefully I keep that up too.

Creativity is something that I really think doesn’t just belong to the Sting’s, Beyonce’s and…I don’t know, Peter Jackson’s of the world. It is a place of exploration that anyone can and everyone should explore, even if you can’t devote hours a day to it (and who can?). I know it’s asking a lot up front but I’ll make my argument. And no, no berets, long cigarettes on that stick thing or copies of Faust are needed…dahlings.

It is an adventure to tackle any of the arts like painting, writing or playing an instrument. You are immediately joining in a long established guild of explorers and not only is there plenty to get stuck into but there are plenty of references out there, especially now with Google and YouTube only tabs away (see my other post on “Library Firepower” if you want to go old school).

In doing this, and I can’t claim immortality, but there is a sort of fountain of youth-ish thing going on where you are never really retired and there is plenty of energy and life you can tap into in the process. You can check out new music with your headphones while you try a paint-in at a local community center. You can get a guitar and start jamming with friends. With writing being the most portable art form you can (did this) go to every Cafe in town to find your favorite, and in the process, meet lots of people. And these are just three. And then there’s the art itself which is like opening the mechanism to a steam clock so I won’t go into that but the best thing is there is usually people you can ask. See a band you like locally and want to play like that? Talk to them after the show. Sounds crazy? I can think of three off the top that got inspired by my band and actually got going from that and so many times we’ve had folks talk after. I’ve done it too. Artists love to talk shop. If your asking it’s hardly because you thought we sucked lol!

What would you like to try? PS. We all fumbled n bumbled at first.

Ready for your adventure?

Apps for Musicians! The Ear Gym!

In the interest of trying things out, I’d thought I’d give a try to trying things. Hopefully that made sense!

I’ve loaded and deleted lots of apps over the ages as I have a little, little phone with not much room and I just keep a few in play.

Let’s kick off with the second in a series of ear training apps I’ve tried, “The Ear Gym.” Ill keep this brief and tight as I’m short on time like yourself.

Way tougher than “functional ear trainer” it actually puts you through paces with interval recognition which is excellent. I’m a big believer in “The Talent Code” (check this out or maybe I’ll do a bit on it later), and anything that puts you in that just-beyond-ability sweet spot is great. I do wish it would go more into recognizing full chords but maybe that’s soon to come ot elsewhere.

8/10

Know an amazing musician app? Post in comments below!

Friday Music Funlist!

I would love to make something like this into a thing…and maybe even share yours in the comments section below!

Its the Friday Funlist!

Basically to me music is an adventure that sends you off trying out different things much like the net surfing that I can only assume brought you here.

Especially with things like the amazing “What’s in my bag” series on Youtube

What’s in my bag with Dave Grohl!

Im just using my phone atm and short on time so Ill just put in my three. Rule is it’s three I discovered this week or about this week. It can be a whole artist or just a clip.

Ok here goes

Hope World by J-Hope

Dont know if you caught this trending a few weeks back but this fun tune by Jung Ho-seok of the South Korean boy band BTS is really fun!

Hope World

The Low Roar Remix

Just can’t say enough good things about Ryan’s project other than he’s inspiring, awesome, and you should be already be familiar with him. Click and be happy in a pleasant kind of way.

Low Roar Remix

Recoil 1+2

Both to show I haven’t abandoned my Depeche Mode roots but this is new to me, here is a track by now former band member Alan Wilder. To my knowledge this strange mechanical electronic piece marked the beginning of a little idea that became his project Recoil, now on its 3rd album.

Recoil 1+2

I will try, depending on how this goes, to add more next week. I would also bring in more from, as I noticed, outside of electronica. I literally have half an hour before getting ready for a show as I’m a celtic musician in St. Patrick’s season. He’s so big it just aint one day lol

See you later!

Cheers šŸ˜€

Get visable!

Friendly group of people waving to you

Can people find you?Ā  Imagine getting an online readership of over 25k!

One of the things I have been working on this morning, due to the fact that I am now full time self employed, is the whole world of self promotion.Ā  This of course takes a myriad of forms, but what’s interesting is how there are bloggers out there that make over 25k in just WordPress followers.Ā  That number is amazing and from what I’ve seen it isn’t entirely impossible to do.

Here’s one link to kind of wet your appetite, or maybe even give you some immediate insights with identifying your target audience…

https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fonecoolsite.wordpress.com%2F2013%2F09%2F01%2Fhow-to-identify-your-blogs-target-audience%2F&h=OAQEr84G-

That said, I have been working with a number of newer companies and artists over the past few years and one thing that I find myself saying all too often is…

ā€œAhh!Ā  What are they doing!?Ā  I’m really looking for them and I can’t find them!Ā  If I can’t find them, how can there be an audience!?ā€

This is not a place I think you want to be.

The Social Media creator pitch

(I don’t know about you but I hate those posts out there that lead you down a garden path and then after hours of your time hit you with ā€œI can tell you for only 49.95!ā€Ā  Ugh.Ā  So here we go…)

I am absolutely happy to help anyone set up there social media platforms for a competitive cost.Ā  I am not a massive Html and Java slinging pro designer who worked for Apple or GoogleĀ any time recently so my costs for this would be relatively low.

However I have had success in my work, and I can easily assistĀ someone outside of the Greater Victoria Area as well, but it will take some emailing back and forth to set up things such as a Twitter platform which typically requires a text message conformation from a unique phone number (your cell).Ā  This is because, well, I can’t afford to buy dozens of cellphones.

The nice thing about me doing it for you is that you can get on with what you do and leave the social media setup to me.Ā  As an example, I set up the entire http://www.westsoundmag.com campaign of website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and email all in about three hours with images and content.Ā  Some of it was from the back of a friend’s car.

My background with all this came slowly, starting with my earliest music projects and just running around with posters.Ā  Posters are still in my world, but we have other people who do that sort of thing these days.Ā  Still, the basic advertising theory isĀ essentially the same.

A show, an event or whatever that’s going on in real time isn’t about the show in itself.Ā  Any event is a reason to put the name out!Ā  With something coming you have suddenly a great reason to advertise the name and then it becomes about repetition.Ā  They say it takes about five years to really lock down a brand in people’s minds.Ā  You don’t expect anyone is going to see your poster, or whatever and suddenly take out a notepad and start jotting things down.Ā  It’s all about seeing that name one more time so that they later on say ā€œOh yeah!Ā  I’ve heard of them!ā€Ā  We move towards what is familiar.Ā  Familiar seems way more reliable and enticing then ā€œNever heard of those guys.ā€

Hiring me or not is totally up to you and your project, but the main thing is to make yourself visible.Ā  Everything is converting to online activity.Ā  Despite all this tech I’m older than I look, and I have had younger folks ask if I dyed my hair this way (It’s grey).Ā  I remember when if you wanted to seem like someone who puts in initiative for work, you would show up with a resume in a shirt and tie.Ā  I have been informed more recently that no one wants you to do that.Ā  They prefer emails.

Emails!?Ā  What a different world this is!Ā  I can distinctly remember a friend in the nineties saying how if a resume and cover letter were faxed they would throw them to the, let’ just call it, ā€œless interestedā€ pile as fax=lazy!

But that’s the thing, and it covers everything these days.Ā  If you want to find the next bus do you use the bus schedule book?Ā  No.Ā  You google the location and it tells all.Ā  Order pizza?Ā  I don’t even know where my classic phone book is right now.Ā  I use the Yelp or Zomato App.

The point of this side trip in the direction of memory lane is that if your product can’t be found online, your product has a problem.Ā  You don’t want to spam people as that has a reverse effect of course, but you do need to at least get visible.

You know what the last thing most people will use their smartphone’s for these days?

As phones.

Telling someone to just give you a call might just have you sitting there listening to your Hootie and The Blowfish album, and that’s about it.

Cheers,

Tom

One World Playlist

300h.png

This is something I’ve just started playing with, along with my more localized Westsound Magazine project.Ā  It came from listening to some Coast Salish drumming on YouTube which lead me to this really interesting Coast Salish SuiteĀ produced by Bravo Fact.Ā  In the video you hear a mix of First Nations music with a full orchestra, resolving with the work of the conductor.

From being a fan of music and watching those giant crowds of people to my own experiences playing before crowds,Ā I can tell you that there is definitely something going on under the surface of our songs.

From the simple power of anĀ drum song to gatherings of music across the world something connects straight into us.Ā  Its like synchronicity.Ā  Or that could be me just being a Police fan.

Anyways, I already had a SoundCloud channel, so I started putting together a playlist of music from around the world.

It isn’t finished (in fact I don’t think it logically could ever truly be) but it’s gotĀ eleven already, mixing some traditional music with some more contemporary.

Have a listen!

Cheers,

Tom
